Individualized Treatment To Meet Your Needs
Elliot Feld, MD (he/him) is a board-certified psychiatrist and therapist at Sapien Psychiatry in North Providence, Rhode Island. As a medical doctor who also provides talk therapy, Dr. Feld offers an integrated approach to mental health treatment.
The body and the mind are two sides of the same coin. Both medication and talk therapy are crucial tools in mental health treatment, and the choice of when and how to apply these tools is different for everyone.
Perhaps you've tried many medications in the past, but with limited results. Or perhaps you've never tried medication before, and aren't sure if it's right for you. Either way, you're in the right place.
While medication can sometimes be an important piece of the puzzle, there are other pieces that deserve and require equal attention.
The word "therapy" is like the word "sport" ... there are tons of different types! And, there are many different coaching styles. Not everything works for everyone... so let's talk and figure out what works for you.
For some, it's an emphasis on coping skills and strategies for navigating anxiety or depression. For others, it involves processing events from the past that are contributing to suffering in the present. Maybe you're struggling with difficult and important decisions about your career or relationships. Maybe you're trying to live a healthier lifestyle but having trouble making changes. Maybe you're experiencing guilt, shame, or suicidal thoughts. Or maybe it's something completely different. Whatever the case may be, starting the conversation is the first step, and often the hardest. It takes a lot of courage to reach out and talk.
Dr. Feld emphasizes a holistic approach and treats each person as a whole and unique being, rather than as a diagnosis or category. We each have different minds, different bodies, different personalities, and different environments. We each have different experiences of culture, family, childhood, ethnicity, race, religion, gender, sexuality, and relationships.
And yet... we are all part of the human species, Homo sapiens.
This is where the name "Sapien Psychiatry" comes from. "Homo sapiens" translates to "wise humans." Every one of us is a wise human ... we all have access to intelligence, curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and connectedness. Our experience of consciousness sets us apart from all other species. Unfortunately, the very thing that makes us unique can also lead to anxiety, depression, and other forms of suffering. By considering all of our available tools (medication, cognitive therapy) and tapping into our innate human wisdom (social connection, nutrition, exercise, circadian rhythm), we can use our wisdom to achieve wellness.
